SELF HEALTH CARE- THE RHYTHM OF LIFE CERTIFICATION COURSE

Duration: 2 Days

Cost: Php 6,000 Per Person

DAY 1 (Morning Class)

Tridosha - Know Your Body & Know Your Food.

Tridosha defines the three fundamental energies or principles that create structure and form in our body. Each element is said to represent a specific kind of energy which governs the function of our bodies on the physical and emotional level. The three energies are known as vata, pitta, and kapha. Each individual has a unique balance of all three of these energies. For instance, Ether or Space is nuclear energy which represents consciousness. Air, which gives movement through the sensory and motor organs, is electrical energy. Water is chemical energy and in the body is present in plasma, cytoplasm, cerebrospinal fluid, vitreous humor, glandular secretions, saliva, pleural secretions, gastric mucosal secretions, sweat and urine. The Fire element is radiant energy. It is responsible for all bodily transformations and is responsible for all metabolic processes such as digestion, absorption and assimilation which lead to the transforming of food into tissue layers. It also regulates body temperature and creates knowledge by transforming our experiences through the senses and the mind. Earth is mechanical energy and is a condensed form of all the energies.

Panchamahabhoots: The concept and the Principle of Ayurveda depends on the theory of Panchamahabhoots, the five basic elements of life that constituents our body. These five elements are Earth (Prithvi), Water (Jala), Fire (Agni or Tej), Air (Vayu) and Ether or Space (Akash). Ayurveda understands body, mind and spirit likewise. It divides the constitution of people into three categories—Vata (ether/air), Pitta (fire/water) and Kapha (water/earth). These are three basic energies or life forces that are the biological derivatives of the five elements and they govern all the function and structure of the body or its existence as a whole. According to Ayurveda, what exists in the Universe also exists in the internal body of every individual. The Panchamahabhuta or the five fundamental elements take origin from this Doshas or the immaterial qualities.

Dosha (humor): Ayurvedic system of medicine in all its aspects is largely dependent upon an understanding of the significance and nature of three humors – Vata, Pitta and Kapha, which is supposed to activate and govern the entire biological process from conception to death. The definition of Ayurveda is the dynamic state of balance of body, mind and spirits. Vata, Pitta and Kapha are the three Doshas of the body. Perfect balance of three Doshas leads to health, imbalance in Tridosha leads to diseases. Each type of Dosha has a unique set of characteristics and the body type of a person depends on their physical and emotional attributes. Ayurveda follows the concept of understanding the Doshas in order to practice suitable Ayurvedic Diet, exercise and lifestyle pattern for healing and balancing of Vata, Pitta and Kapha.

Your Health and Happiness are In Your Hands: Know Your Body and Know Your Food

Maharishi Vagbhata says if you want to be healthy – Know your Body and Know your Food. This much is enough to take care of almost all ailments! One who knows the food requires no doctor. Personal analysis of Dosha helps you know about your body and your food. You can prepare a diet chart according to the requirements of your body to maintain optimum health. Knowing your Dosha can also help you to know how an imbalance is likely to occur in yourself. It will help you to maintain a good and balanced personal, family and professional life.

DAY 1 (Afternoon Class)

Vagbhata Sutra - Ayurveda Way of Living for Greater Longevity.

Ayurveda Philosophy: “Realization of righteousness (dharma), wealth (artha) and happiness (sukha) depends on the long life. Hence, a person desirous of long life should keep the lessons of Ayurveda in the highest esteem” –Astanga Hridaya of Vagbhata.

Purpose of life:

Dharma- following the path of righteousness, Artha – earning money in a legal way, Kama – fulfilling our desire, Moksha – achieving Salvation

According to Ayurveda, to achieve this purpose of life, one should concentrate on having a long life. To learn the science of Ayurveda, which explains how to achieve this purpose, ‘obedience’ (Vidheya) is the most important quality. Do not engage yourself in things that are devoid of four pursuits Dharma (righteousness), Artha (wealth) and Kama (pleasure), and Moksha (salvation): you should carry on the occupation without going contrary to them (dharma and karma). The life span of a human is one hundred years. Dividing that time, he should attend to three aims of life in such a way that they support, rather than hinder each other. In his youth he should attend to profitable aims (artha) such as learning, in his prime to pleasure (karma), and in his old age to dharma and moksha.

Vagbhata Sutra: Maharishi Vagbhata was one of the greatest doctors of Ayurveda who tested and retested Ayurvedic medicines and spread it among common people so they could make use of this divine knowledge. He introduced one of the most important Ayurvedic methods for daily routine known as Dinacharya which provides you healthy habits to establish rhythm of life in your daily routine to optimize your health from the moment you awake to the time you sleep each day with detailed guidance on food, sleep, sex, exercise, yoga, meditation and more inspiring practices.

Dinacharya (Daily Routine): Daily Routine in harmony with nature is absolutely necessary to maintain balance of the body, mind and spirit. It helps you to establish own “rhythm of life” for balancing your Vata, Pitta and Kapha. It also regulates all bodily systems to achieve health and happiness. It guides you for self-health care management on what, how much, and when to eat and drink, food nutrition and food contraindications. You will learn to balance Dosha and Dinacharya with Narure’s Cycle (Ayurvedic Clock). You can bring it to your family and the community service an “Ayurveda lifestyle Teacher” for prevention of diseases and restoring health and balance.

Ritucharya (Seasonal Routine): Seasonal Regime in Ayurveda - According to Ayurveda the constitution or Dosha of the body and the seasons are intimately related. Your health is affected by the qualities of the climate you live in; your outer environment influences your inner world. For example, when the air is damp, cold and wet it increases these qualities in your body. Hence there is an increase in mucous, catarrh and colds in winter. There are various environmental factors like temperature, humidity, wind, rain, clouds and atmospheric pressure and sunlight, etc that affect our health.

Seasonal routine will help you in achieving balance of Doshas. Follow the seasonal routine to avoid changing stress of the seasons and associated diseases. Seasonal routine helps in achieving good benefits of the atmosphere. Practice of Dinacharya combined with Ritucharya will lead you to experience and enjoy a long, healthy and happy life

Ayurveda recognizes that seasonal changes have a profound effect on your health, and recommends many helpful suggestions for how you can adapt to your lifestyle these person specific suggestions. One lifestyle or diet does not suit everybody as people have different constitutional make up. Ayurveda emphasizes on the maintenance of good health through a balanced daily routine (Dinacharya), seasonal routine (Ritucharya) and a balanced diet to make your body immune enough to adjust to those changes and stay balanced in each season.

Ayurvedic Clock (Biological Clock): In life, we can go with or against the current of nature’s natural rhythms. Our diurnal rhythms and hormonal fluctuations are tied to the natural cycles and, when these are all in harmony with each other, life seems a lot easier – like swimming downstream instead of upstream. According to Ayurveda, the stress of living against these natural cycles is a fundamental violation of healthy lifestyle. Emerging science suggests that each cycle of the day as described in Ayurveda supports different activities. Living in harmony with nature’s cycles is a powerful lifestyle tool to de-stress the body and mind and begin to enjoy life.

In nature, there are two 12-hour cycles that are each divided into three smaller cycles. Each 4-hour cycle is linked to certain bodily functions governed by Vata (air & space), which controls the nervous system, Pitta (fire), which controls digestion and metabolism, and Kapha (earth and water), which controls immunity and structural strength. Understanding how to connect a daily routine to these cycles is powerful medicine in Ayurveda.

DAY 2 (Afternoon Class)

Ailments & Ayurvedic Home Remedies From The Kitchen Pharmacy & Herbal Garden.

Ayurvedic Home Remedies: Inadequate knowledge of preventive health care is the root cause of many common diseases among the population. Knowledge of herbal medicinal plants is part of our culture and tradition. Most of the civilizations have their own signature practices based on medicinal plants and it has been serving as a primary health care management for many centuries. It has been estimated that many households in the past were able to make home remedies for more than 30 to 40 indications but we have lost that knowledge during our journey from traditional way of living to modern living.

Kitchen Pharmacy: Kitchen Pharmacy is the Ayurveda's gift to the world for health and happiness. You will also learn how to set up “kitchen pharmacy” at your home, make your own spice kits and the use of Ayurvedic healing spices like turmeric, cumin, coriander, fennel, mint, asafetida (hing), black pepper, cardamom, cinnamon, saffron, nutmeg, cayenne and ginger powder to your meals for improved digestion and nourishing all the seven Dhatus/body tissues for healing and maintaining optimum health in every aspect- body, mind and spirit.

Herbal Garden: Planting and growing herbs and spices can be started from seed or planted as plants. Planting herbal plants is easier than starting them from seed but starting herbs from seeds is not that difficult. Once you have planted herbs in your garden, make sure that it gets good sunshine, water and natural compost. By starting an herbal garden in the backyard and growing herbs and spices, you can add beauty to your garden and flavor to your kitchen. It's very satisfying and you can enjoy home-grown herbs all year round. Furthermore, the course will teach you the preparation and use of herbal medicinal plants for common health problems.

Ayurvedic Cooking At Home For Health and Happiness

Duration 2 Days

Cost:  Php 6,000 Per Person

‘Whatever is beneficial for worldly happiness, whatever pertains to Vedic practices and whatever action leads to spiritual upliftment is said to be established in food’. – Caraka Samhita.

Would you like to integrate Ayurveda into your daily routine at home? Are you interested in heathy food to cook some Ayurvedic recipes? This is easier than you might think! In the Ayurvedic cooking it is generally important to ensure that the various constitutional types Kapha, Vata and Pitta use different kinds of foods. Therefore, always pay close attention to what Dosha you are, and accordingly, which Ayurvedic foods are best suitable for your health as well as healing!

The science of Ayurvedic cooking: You are what you eat. For centuries, this has been the basis of most cuisines across the world. But it was Ayurveda, which first introduced the art of ‘personalized cooking’ based on the understanding of the unique combination of Vata (Ether), Pitta (Fire) and Kapha (Water) that constitutes the human body and balances its life forces, the Ayurvedic cuisine encompasses dishes made with such combination of food that optimizes these elements in the human body. In fact, it went a step further by demonstrating how not only what you eat makes a difference but how it is cooked also makes a difference.

The Art of Ayurvedic Cooking:  It is not enough to provide a balanced diet, but the food should be palatable and enjoyed by the people. The art of preparation of healthy food and appetizing food has no limit. One of the golden rule is to eat varieties of food which not only avoid monotony, but ensure better nutrition. The principles of nutrition and the art of Ayurvedic cooking, are essential for longevity, health and happiness.

Balanced Diet: In Ayurveda there are 6 tastes: sweet, astringent, sour, salty, pungent and bitter. Just like the Doshas, each taste is composed of two elements. For instance, the sweet taste is composed of earth and water, the sour taste of fire and water. We have already seen that each element has certain gunas (qualities); for instance, the gunas (qualities) of water include heavy, cold, moist, liquid, slow. By carefully studying the elements of certain tastes and the corresponding gunas (qualities) you will quickly understand what the influence of those tastes is on your mental and physical condition.

Madhura (sweet), Amla (Sour), Lavana (Salt), Tiktan(Bitter), Katum (Pungent), Kashaya (Astringent) are the six types of Rasa. They are successively lower in energy. That means, Sweet taste imparts maximum energy to body and the astringent, the least. In the list of tastes, the first three, i.e. sweet, sour and salt mitigates Vata and increases Kapha. The last three, i.e. bitter, pungent and astringent tastes mitigates Kapha and increases Vata. Astringent, bitter and sweet taste mitigates Pitta. Sour, salt and pungent tastes increase Pitta.

Some food items are hot in nature and some food items are cold in nature. Generally, substances that have astringent, bitter and sweet tastes are coolant in nature and sour, salt and pungent tastes are hot in nature. While eating and during digestion, the first, second and third part are dominated by Kapha, Pitta and Vata respectively. A balanced diet that includes grains, dal or beans, vegetables and the yogurt drink should take only about 30 minutes for preparation and cooking. You will enjoy a home-cooked Ayurvedic meal that is fresh, wholesome, nutritious and balanced.

Ayurvedic Recipes: The art of lactic fermentation – yogurt and ghee, vegetarian food, soups, raw food diet, par boiled food, steam cooking, payesh (a dish that combines the fat in milk with the starch in rice to boost energy) were Ayurvedic inventions.  Often considered as the father of Indian vegetarian cuisine, thanks to its plants and plant produce’s heavy usage, Ayurveda in its journey to evolve dishes that create the perfect balance in the body has also introduced most of the cooking styles that are termed healthy today, like pan frying, roasting, steaming and blanching. What also lends Ayurvedic cooking its unique identity aside the cooking method used for each food and the good use of local ingredients, is the use of certain herbs and spices. Adding Ayurvedic spices to your daily food is a great way to prevent disease and optimize health.

Kitchen Pharmacy: Your kitchen should have the following staple ingredients on hand: mung beans, whole grains such as rice, barley, quinoa, or couscous; ghee, coconut or olive oil; fresh vegetables; yogurt; wheat flour; Ayurvedic spices such as ginger, turmeric, cumin, coriander, fennel, mint, asafetida (hing), black pepper, cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg and cayenne that enhance digestion and metabolism, cleanse Ama from the body and prevent digestive disorders such as gas and bloating.

“When diet is wrong medicine is of no use. When diet is correct medicine is of no need.”

AYURVEDIC MASSAGE AND THERAPIES

CERTIFICATION COURSE

Duration: 10 Days

Cost: Php 30,000 Per Person

Ayurvedic Massage and Therapies derived from the ancient texts of Ayurvedic Medicine and Yoga Sutras for the mind, body and soul. As in any holistic medicine, inner and outer radiance and aging are closely related. The more we nurture ourselves, the more radiant we become mentally, spiritually and physically and emotionally, regardless of our particular body shape or proportions. The secret in retaining youth and beauty is ensuring the proper circulation of vital life fluids and the regular discharge of waste materials through therapies such as Panchakarma. Nothing helps the body more than a routine care and nurturing through tools such as massage. In the Ayurvedic tradition, massage is considered just as essential to overall health and beauty as good diet and positive lifestyle. The training program includes theoretical and practical session on Ayurvedic massage techniques and therapies like Abhyanga, Takradhara, Udvarthana, Nasya, Patra Pinda Sweda, Beauty Care etc.

Abhyanga Massage: Abhyanga is an ancient Indian Ayurvedic Massage therapy for cleansing, healing and balancing of Body, Mind and Spirit. This particular Ayurvedic Massage involves gentle, choreographed, rhythmic strokes using a variety of techniques, including Marma point (vital energy centers) stimulation to enhance skin tone and revitalize your entire body so to induce deep relaxation. This Ayurvedic detoxification and rejuvenation therapy is performed with herbal oils. It incorporates an aromatic combination of medicated oils prepared with herbs warmed and blended to according to individual Dosha type. A daily Abhyanga massage practice promotes better sleep at night, delays aging, removes fatigue, improves eye sight, boosts immune system, improves skin complexion, increases physical strength, helps you lose weight and enhances longevity.

Marma Massage: Ayurvedic body massage is performed with an acute awareness of the Marmas and Chakras to balance Vata, Pitta and Kapha. In Ayurveda, Marmas are vital points similar to acupressure points. Manipulated correctly, they revitalized the entire body. Marmas are innumerable, there are 107 major ones located at the junctions where flesh, veins, arteries, tendons, bones and joints meet, as well as secondary seats of subtle energy (Prana). It is at these areas that pain, weaknesses and diseases tend to congregate. Marmas are also the points where the elemental life forces of ether, air, fire, water and earth converge and therefore where the body’s organizing intelligence is most concentrated.

The seven great Marmas in Ayurvedic massage are the same as the main Chakras in Yoga. According to Ayurveda, each Chakras nourishes particular organs and controls various psycho-physiological aspects of our being. When they are blocked, physical disease ensues. Ayurvedic oil massage opens and cleanses these vital channels so the energy can flow freely and our latent vitality is released that helps you remove stress and enjoy a brightness of the senses- balance body, mind and soul.

Takradhara (Buttermilk Drip): The Takradhara treatment is a form of Shirodhara, a purifying and rejuvenating therapy designed to have a balancing effect on the brain. By pouring medicated buttermilk on top of the forehead in a rhythmic manner, it eliminates toxins, enhances blood circulation, relieves stress, improves sleep and increases mental clarity and concentration. Medicated buttermilk together with herbs has tremendous cooling properties and helps recenter and balance your mental health and wellbeing.

Udvarthana: Udvarthana treatment is special therapeutic deep tissue massage using herbal powders. This massage involves upward stroking, where the powder is rubbed forcibly on the body. The massage is done in the opposite direction to hair follicles by two therapists. Followed by warm water bath. Benefits indicated in obesity, diabetic neuropathy, paralysis, skin diseases, sciatica, indigestion and sclerosis of blood vessels.

Nasya: Nasya therapy is a process where herbal oils and medicines are administered through the nostrils. Since nose is the gateway of the head, the therapy is highly effective in curing a number of diseases pertaining to the head and nervous system, facial paralysis, frozen shoulder, migraine, multiple sclerosis, Parkinsonism, shoulder pain, sinusitis and stammering stiffness in the head, neck, teeth and jaw.

Patra Pinda Sweda: It is one of the major sudation process in which fomentation is done by the application of medicinal leaves processed in medicated oil. These are made into bolus which are warmed by dipping in medicated oil and applied over body ailments affecting bones, joints and nervous system, give relief for body pain, arthritis, backache, muscular diseases, neuritis, neurological disorders, myalgia, chronic back pain, sciatica, spondylosis, lumbar spondylitis, cervical spondylitis, sprains and cramps, neuralgia and sports injuries.

Ayurvedic Beauty Therapy: Ayurveda - a holistic approach to health based on the belief that health and wellness beauty depends on finding a balance between body, mind and spirit. Ayurveda approach towards the beauty in not only external but it is deeply rooted inside the body. Ayurveda firmly believes that true beauty comes from within. Along with external treatment it puts more emphasis on internal approach. The ancient wisdom offers beautiful enhancement treatments which are purely natural and free from toxic chemicals like modern cosmetics that contain skin irritants and carcinogenic ingredients. Herbal extracts and essential oils are to be added for their additional healing properties and pleasant fragrances.

Ayurveda MukhSoundarya (Face) is a facial beauty treatment to improve color and complexion of the skin using gentle Ayurvedic face packs, face wash and cream. It activates deep centers of the brain, reflex points and facial circulation to totally soothe the body. Tensions in the neck, shoulders, and face are freed and energy is rebalanced from head to toe. Ayurveda KeshaSoundarya (hair care) is the conditioning treatment for your hair using various herbal powders and pastes.
