A Call for Global Action inspired by the Real Health Care Reform Movement
Wellnessland supports SHEM(Self Health Empowerment Movement), a non-profit organization engaged in self health education, educating the masses on healthy lifestyle. We are compelled to speak out about the topic of REAL health care reform, asking that our fellow citizens unite behind one of the most important issues of our time.
Will we accept that health care reform is about identifying who will pay for the ever-increasing cost of care, as though these rising disease trends and their associated costs are inevitable? As a nation, we cannot accept the unsustainable reality of our current disease and disability care system—a system that is NOT addressing the continued upward trajectory of these alarming trends.
We must take action and issue a rally cry that calls for REAL health care reform that swiftly and proactively addresses the 80% or more of all health care spending that pays for the treatment of conditions rooted in unhealthful lifestyle choices. This laser focus on modifiable behaviors—starting with what we eat and how we move—is the path to sustainable health and sustainable health care. There is no other way.
We are fortunate to have the world’s best acute health care, but when we consider that the majority of health care spending in the U.S. and other countries is tied to the treatment of conditions rooted in unhealthful lifestyle behaviors, it’s time for us to wake up and take action. Even the World Health Organization now recognizes that noncommunicable disease—no longer infectious disease—is the looming global pandemic.
Now is the time to inject “health” back into health care. Now is the time for all parties that compose our health care delivery system—clinicians, patients, government, medical educators, insurers, self-insured employers, benefits consultants, the media and others—to step in and help lead this galvanized force for change.
Wellnessland as an organization is passionately supporting the Real Health Care Reform Movement. Our founder is a member of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine(ACLM), a medical professional society the represents health care providers and executives who understand that a Lifestyle Medicine-first approach to health care is imperative. What this means is that, rather than treating symptoms with ever-increasing quantities of pills and costly procedures, our first step is to identify and make every effort to eradicate the root cause of the disease. ACLM defines Lifestyle Medicine as the use of evidence-based lifestyle therapeutic approaches, such as a predominantly whole food, plant-based diet, regular physical activity, adequate sleep, stress management, avoidance of risky substance use and other non-drug modalities, to prevent, treat, and, oftentimes, reverse lifestyle-related, chronic disease.
We hear so often that we’re in the midst of a shift from fee-for-service to value-based care. Lifestyle Medicine is synonymous with value-based care, resulting in lowered costs and superior health outcomes.
If we care about the solvency of our nation and the vitality of its people, then it’s vital that Lifestyle Medicine become the foundation of all health care. Now is the time to inject “health” back into health care. Now is the time for REAL health care reform!
